Invitation

My aunt invited me and surprised me with a wonderful lunch: roasted beef, dumplings, salad, red wine, blueberry creme and an excellent apple-wine-cake! We had a nice day together.
Many thanks, aunt R.!

Vielen Dank, Tante R.!

This is lovely, Claudia - your style is quite similar to my memory paintings. I started by defining a format and size. Mine are only 9x12cm. I am amazed by how much can be included in such a small picture. I wrote down a lot of ideas, sometimes whole texts for a picture, sometimes just a word or two. Then I leave the ideas to 'grow' and when I feel ready to tackle a topic, I do a pencil drawing with quite a lot of erasing. Then I trace it onto water colour paper over a light box (or window) with a micron pen - then 'colour in'. Often new ideas come as I paint, or details are remembered and added in. Things people said come to mind too as I work and sometimes that goes into the text. I never do faces of known people as they will inevitably cause family viewers to focus on inaccuracy instead of the story. I try to do a mix of topics - some deeply meaningful to me/influences on who I am, some humourous, some showing 'the olden days';also different perspectives - some close up, some distance scenes. I meant to use a greater variety of mediums but there are only a few that are not pen and watercolour. Most important for me is to accept that what I can do is good enough. That way, I actually keep going and I am really so pleased to have got this far.

This is great! There is a lot of feeling in this work, it's so vivid. That food looks entirely delicious too!

Mmmm wish I'd been at the party, sounds delicious ! I do like your work, and you are inspiring to me because you keep sketching and painting, even in breaks at work...which is exactly what one should do ! I am SO lazy ! Well done you. Take care.

What a lovely drawing you have made of your delightful lunch with your aunt. Sounds devine, both the meny and the day itself. And your aunt must be a very good cook indeed.

Thank you, dear Claudia, for your lovely comments in my blog. You have no idea how your kind words touched me. I am so pleased that you took the time to express them, as they were very welcome indeed. It is always a joy to visit your blog and to see that you have visited mine. I think you were the first foreign visitor in mine when I started back in October last year. I still remember how happy I was to discover that someone "far away" had found me and had taken the trouble to leave a comment. Thank you!
