Of all German writers, Hermann Hesse is my favourite one. He lived from 1877 to 1962. His style, mastery and command of the German language is - in my opinion - unsurpassed. I know that there are people who learn German only to read his work - and they are right.

...ich weiß leider nicht, von wem die Übersetzung war; ich nehme aber an, sie stammt von einem Engländer, keinem Amerikaner.
